Voice Origination and DIDs for Carriers
Get phone numbers (DIDs) from Wise Network and receive the calls dialled to them on your own switch or platform, over a SIP interconnection.
What is voice origination?
Voice origination is the wholesale service that delivers inbound calls to a carrier or platform. The provider supplies phone numbers, called DIDs (direct inward dialling numbers), and when someone dials one of them on the public phone network, the provider receives the call and hands it to the customer's network over SIP. It is the opposite direction to voice termination, which carries calls out.
How inbound traffic reaches your network
- Numbers are assigned. We provision DIDs in the countries and number types you order and map each one to your SIP endpoint.
- A caller dials the number. The call travels through the caller's operator to the network that holds the number range.
- We receive the call. It arrives on our platform, which looks up which customer endpoint the DID belongs to.
- We deliver it to you. The call is sent to your switch over SIP, with the dialled number and, where the network provides it, the caller's number.
Wholesale DID numbers
DIDs are the inventory behind origination. Availability, number types (geographic, mobile, toll-free) and the documents required differ by country, and some countries restrict which uses a number can serve. We confirm what is possible for each country before you order, so numbers are not assigned that cannot legally be used for your service.
Origination vs termination
| Origination | Termination | |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | Inbound: callers to your numbers | Outbound: your users to any number |
| Needs numbers? | Yes, DIDs | No |
| Priced by | Numbers plus inbound minutes | Minutes, by destination |
| Page | This page | Voice termination |
Reporting and billing
Inbound calls are recorded as CDRs and rated on our own billing platform. Partners see traffic and statements through the web interface, with separate access levels for operations and finance teams.
Who it is for
Carriers that need numbers in countries where they hold no licence, CPaaS platforms that resell numbers to developers, and contact-centre and UCaaS providers that need local inbound presence for their customers.
Frequently asked questions
What is a DID?
A DID (direct inward dialling number) is a phone number that routes calls to a specific endpoint on a customer's network rather than to a single phone line. In wholesale terms, it is the number inventory behind voice origination.
Can I buy origination and termination together?
Yes. Most carriers use the same SIP interconnection for both directions, with separate rate plans for outbound minutes and for numbers and inbound minutes.
How is origination priced?
Usually as a monthly charge per number plus a per-minute rate for inbound calls, which depends on the country and number type. Some number types carry set-up charges.
Do number requirements differ by country?
Yes. Many countries require proof of address or business registration before numbers are assigned. We tell you the requirements per country before ordering.
